La Leche League of New York – La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. All women interested in breastfeeding are welcome to attend the monthly Group Meetings or call a Leader for breastfeeding help.
New York State has a Breastfeeding Mothers’ Bill of Rights, which protects a mothers’ right to breastfeed in public and express milk at work.
Breastfeeding.com is a comprehensive website with lots of really good information about breastfeeding.
Best for Babes is a cool non-profit that advocates for breast feeding mothers and promotes breast feeding information.
For moms working outside the home
The federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (also known as Health Care Reform) mandates that employers shall provide breastfeeding employees with “reasonable break time” and a private, non-bathroom place to express breast milk during the workday, up until the child’s first birthday.
The Colorado Breastfeeding Coalition has helpful videos on breastfeeding and working, employer accommodations for nursing moms, and the Colorado legislation that protects breastfeeding moms at work (NY’s legislation is similar).
The Business Case for Breastfeeding is a free comprehensive downloadable resource designed to educate employers about the value of supporting breastfeeding employees in the workplace – including retention of experienced employees; reduction in sick time taken by both moms and dads for children’s illnesses; and lower health care and insurance costs.
